Feeling Overlooked? Gen-X Tips to Boost Your Job Search Success

Nov 04, 2024

Introduction:

Let’s be real—if you’re a Gen-X woman on a job search, re-entering the job market, or trying to pivot to a new role, you might feel like the odds are stacked against you. Does it seem like job searching has turned into a multi-step obstacle course that requires a combination of tech savvy, patience, and sheer willpower? You’re not alone, and you’re definitely not imagining it. The job market has changed, and those of us with a few (amazing) decades of experience are feeling it a bit more.

So, What’s Changed?

For starters, AI has swooped in, screening resumes before they ever see human eyes. And yes, there’s also age bias—something most Gen-X job seekers face, despite years of valuable experience. According to AARP, 60% of workers aged 50 and older report experiencing some form of age discrimination, from jokes to being overlooked for growth opportunities. We might not be “old” (thank you very much), but the workplace sometimes acts like we’re relics.

Here’s how you can navigate these new challenges, use your experience as an asset, and start seeing the job search results you want.

1. Cracking the Code to Reduce Age Bias Starts with Your Resume

Okay, first things first—let’s take “age math” out of the equation. If your resume has dates from the 1900s (think 1980s or 90s), let’s go ahead and hit delete on those. Here’s what to update:

  • Remove College Graduation Dates: They’re not relevant, and all they do is let someone do quick math.
  • Remove Experience Older than 15 Years: Focus on your recent achievements and align them with today’s market.
  • Ditch the High School Details: We’re past that stage—your experience is what matters now.

Eliminating these dates increases your chance of getting into the interview room, where you can make a high-energy, confident impression and prove why you’re the right choice.

2. Update Your Job Search Techniques: The New Resume Rules

Gone are the days when a resume with a bit of “pizazz” was enough. Today, it needs to work both for the AI (Applicant Tracking Systems) and the hiring manager who may glance at it for, oh, 10 seconds.

  • Think Strategically: Your resume needs to check two boxes—getting through the AI screening and making a clear impact on the hiring manager. Keywords are key here (literally), so tailor your resume to match the job description.
  • Keep it Simple: Use a clean, two-page format with a strong professional summary and skills section.
  • Metrics Matter: Quantify everything! Hiring managers want to see results, so don’t be shy about your accomplishments.

Need a little tutorial on this? I have an AI Resume Course where I teach you tips and tricks using my bestie ChatGPT, and it's available for only $59. You can grab it HERE.

3. Leverage Your Unique Experience and Tell Your Story

Gen-X women bring a wealth of experience to the table—but you’ve got to own it. Focus on your most relevant experience for the jobs you’re pursuing, and get comfortable with showcasing your achievements.

  • Prepare Impactful Stories: You’ve done amazing things, so tell the interview panel exactly why you’re an asset. Think about real-life examples where you drove success and be ready to share.
  • Practice Your “About Me”: The dreaded “tell me about yourself” question is your opportunity to shine. Be clear, be confident, and don’t play small—this isn’t the time for modesty!
  • Identify What Makes You Unique: You've learned how to do things the hard way; share why that makes you an asset when it comes to solving problems, driving innovation, and leading teams.

4. Include Your Fan Club: Networking Works!

Networking is a secret weapon, so don’t be shy—activate your connections. Here’s how to put your fan club to work for you:

  • Friends, Family, and Acquaintances: Everyone in your circle should know what you’re looking for. You’d be amazed at the connections people have—one of my clients landed an interview thanks to a casual conversation with her chiropractor!
  • LinkedIn Fan Club: Use LinkedIn to reconnect with past colleagues or join industry groups. Some of my clients have landed interviews and valuable feedback simply by reaching out.

5. Apply—Don’t Wait for Perfection

Have you been holding back because you don’t meet every single requirement on a job listing? Here’s a tip: if you meet 60% of the requirements and love the role, apply! Don’t wait for perfection or assume a “no” before you’ve even tried.

Quick Resume Do’s and Don’ts for the Modern Job Search:

  • Do keep it simple, clear, and make good use of two pages.
  • Don’t use photos or unnecessary graphics.
  • Do highlight leadership skills and metrics to prove your impact.
  • Don’t forget to include volunteer work, especially if you’ve had a career break.
  • Do remove outdated experience and graduation dates.
  • Don’t focus too much on soft skills—prioritize what’s relevant to the role.

Interview Do’s and Don’ts for Gen-X Job Seekers:

  • Do start preparing before you land the interview.
  • Do catalog your achievements and practice storytelling.
  • Don’t gloss over your successes.
  • Do answer questions with confidence—your experience speaks for itself.
  • Don’t worry about sounding “cocky”; this is confidence Gen-X style!

Bonus Tip: Embrace Age Diversity

Yes, the people interviewing you might be younger, and that’s okay. Age diversity is just as important as any other type of diversity, and a mix of generations in the workplace can make companies stronger. Embrace your unique perspective, and don’t shy away from discussing how your experience makes you an asset.

To celebrate these two milestones (and to practice what I preach about owning your achievements!), I’m hosting a Live Launch Party on Zoom, November 12th at 4:30 pm PT. There will be prizes, a trivia game based on my new book, and a lively Q&A to connect with you directly.  If this sounds like fun, RSVP HERE for the details.

I can’t wait to see you there—mark your calendar, and let’s celebrate together!
